USA – Southwest Airlines has opened applications for its Destination 225° University and Cadet pathways. AFM has put together relevant information on the program.

The Destination 225° program is Southwest Airlines' professional pilot development program, designed to create a defined career path from training to employment as a First Officer on the airline's all-Boeing 737 fleet.
The full cadet pathway takes approximately four years from entry to First Officer employment.
The Cadet pathway is an estimated 13-month, 40-hour-per-week ab-initio training programme delivered through three training partners:
- CAE in Mesa, Arizona ($116,578 estimated tuition)
- SkyWarrior in Pensacola, Florida ($88,700)
- US Aviation Academy in Denton, Texas ($99,900)
- Costs are estimates of tuition and training fees and may not include additional expenses such as housing.
Cadets earn all ratings necessary to become a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), then complete a two-year CFI commitment with a program partner before progressing to Southwest Airlines as a First Officer.
The program includes a preferential interview with a partner, type ratings, and experience-building opportunities during the CFI phase.
Each cadet is assigned a Southwest Airlines First Officer mentor from day one, with personal engagement and mentorship throughout the four-year pathway.
Educational touchpoints are facilitated at each flight school and at Southwest Airlines' training facility in Dallas, Texas.
The training follows an integrated competency-based model, with Southwest and its partners collaborating to teach participants operational standards aligned with the airline's methodology.
The University pathway partners with 12 institutions:
- Angelo State University
- Arizona State University
- Auburn School of Aviation
- Baylor University
- Kent State University
- Louisiana Tech University
- Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU Aerospace)
- University of Nebraska at Omaha Aviation Institute\
- Oklahoma State University
- University of Oklahoma
- Southeastern Oklahoma State University
- Texas Southern University
Southwest has updated its application process, now requiring all applicants to upload a resume, two letters of recommendation, proof of education, and logbook at the time of application.
Applications submitted without all required documents will not be considered. Applicants must also obtain an FAA First-Class Medical Certificate and complete the ADAPT assessment as part of the selection process.
Southwest Airlines plans to hire over 870 pilots and promote 662 Captains in 2026, underpinning strong demand for the Destination 225° pipeline.
